BC Place Rooftop Collapse

On January 5, 2007 the roof of BC Place collapsed. You can see the video here.
This video was featured on Vancouver's BCTV news after the collapse to illustrate the timeline of events leading up the rooftop collapse.

BC Place Rooftop Raising

On January 19, 2007 the roof of BC Place was raised. The new roof looks quite clean and it fills that void where something was suddenly missing from our cityscape after being a staple of our city for almost 25 years. here.

About these images:

This webcam is dedicated to the changing skyline of Vancouver. The area in this image has been zoned for a number of residences over 30 meters high. This will eventually block the view of this webcam. I am not against new buildings in this area but it will certainly destroy the view from here. This webcam and its footage will become a historical record of this change.

The images on this website are only a small part of what is being catalogued and made into a moving image. There are more than two million (2000000) images captured since October 2004. This project will go on as long as the camera functions and this vantage point is available.

The camera and webcam server are built from second hand and previously discarded parts that were not intended to be used as a webcam. The software used for this project is open-source. There is no budget or sponsorship for this project.

A little more about this camera

The webcam project is now complete with over 2 000 000 images captured and stored. Since we have now moved to Kyoto we can't keep the camera running at the current location. We are looking for a new home for the camera in Vancouver right now. We have one possible location but the details still need to be worked out. Until then, the image you see the the last one taken before the server was shut-down.

The two results from this project will be a video and a large collage of the images. The video will be 24 hours long showing the entire two years of captured frames. The collage will be made as one file if it is possible to make an image over 905600 pixels wide and 679200 pixels high. Otherwise, it will need to be made in sections. This is 64 meters wide at printing resolution.

We also trying to work on a new webcam project in Kyoto. It will probably be something totally different. If you live in Kyoto and would like to help, please get in touch with us.
